CULTURE SHOCK

NOUN

The feeling of disorientation experienced by someone when they are suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes.

Culture shock is something I had never experienced first hand, that was before walking the streets of Bangkok. I hadn’t gained much knowledge or understanding of Asian cultures and traditions, and I knew nothing of the language. The way of life and appreciation for certain aspects of life are very different to anything I had experienced before, it really did feel unfamiliar.

I spent several months travelling South from Bangkok, through Thailand, into Malaysia, before ending my journey in Singapore. I spent a lot of time in urban environments, photographing the city streets, the faces and objects found in them, the art and architecture, the fashion and styles, the nature and the traditions. I found myself immersed in a culture full of vibrant colour, religious celebration, ritual, costume and bold dress and ancient temples.. I learnt about different religious celebrations and festivals, and quickly realised just how much Asian culture continues to be shaped by its religious beliefs and practises. Its something that is still very apparent today and remains at the forefront of any celebration or event.
