THINK BIG and THE QUESTIONS:
Although my initial visualisation of my outcome was a collection of fabrics or items for an interior collection, having the project take a more sculptural, installation inspired direction could mean a different outcome. Working on a bigger scale to create something effective and mesmerising could be an alternative result. Time constraints are always the main concern, whats achievable in the next 6 months?
An interior collection could be something I go on to develop after the MA. Maybe designing fewer but larger pieces could be just as effective in conveying the story, and involve more exciting exploration during the MA.
I have composed some questions to reflect on over the break which will determine the direction of The Hungry Ghost Project:
THE QUESTIONS:
1. Its going to be tactile, so does it need to be interactive? Will people be able to touch it?
2. Can the journey be conveyed through one piece or does it need to be a piece for each part of the story?
3. Does it need to be a sensory experience/journey for someone to walk through? Can it be a room? Can it be a space? Could it be a display?
4. Your interests specifically include lanterns, as well as using texture to enhance a sensory experience, you have researched light, can the outcomes be simply decorative or would you like to use lighting?
THE ANSWERS:
1. YES. My own personal obsession of feeling and interacting with tactile surfaces, along with the use of different textured yarns and decorative surfaces mean that the outcomes need to be interactive in someway. I want people to be able to touch it. Therefore it can’t just be a hanging lantern display, unless they hang low enough.
Possibilities of interactive outcomes:
- low hanging lanterns - free standing lamp - chair cover
- rug/floor covering - beanbag/pouffe/seat like object.
2. NO. The journey could be conveyed through one piece, it would just need to be big enough to show the journey clearly. I would prefer to have a piece for each part of journey, each part has very different aesthetics so conveying that in one piece might not be as strong.
3. YES. It needs to be an experience, therefore not just a display. It needs to be in a space or a room that gives the person space to move from one piece to the next, literally following and experiencing the journey of the Hungry Ghost.
4. YES. Id like to use lighting, my vision is that the sensory experience will be a combination of heavily textured knitting, different lighting and some sound to successfully convey the journey of the Hungry Ghost. Sound, through decorative bells and potentially music: Two Suns, CloZee Remix, Tor - Blue Book remixed.
