A disappointing morning of dying resulted in...ordering new embroidery threads!
After a burning test I thought the threads were polyester, experimenting with disperse dye and dylon dye I time tested dip dying the threads into black dye. I tried 5, 10, 15 and 20 with the Dylon dye, and 10 and 20 with the disperse dye. The results are displayed above.
The disperse dye was more successful than dylon, which barely took to the threads at all and in no way seems darker after soaking for longer, however the disperse was still very far from the result I was hoping to achieve. After 20minutes it had darkened but nowhere near dark enough.
After doing some dye research and seeking advice from David, the dye technician, I am going to order some viscose threads as the result of a dark black ombre effect should be easier to achieve.
In the mean time I intend to use the current threads to experiment making different tassels as design development for part 2 and 3.
