Lantern Frame - Considerations

Following discussions with different members of staff across the different departments at NTU, I have established some different ideas and options when considering what materials and methods to construct the frame and the knitted fabric around it.

Materials to research for the frame :

- Aluminium bars

- Wooden Dowelling

- Joins on the 3D printer (angular, x2 different ones, 32 in total)

Having the frame visible would make the construction and addition of the knitted fabric much simpler. However I would then need to consider how that would affect the overall design and how that would work with the knitted panels on the inside.

Painting the frame with UV paint and using a UV light bulb to hang at the top of the lantern would maintain the UV aspects of the project, and be a continuation from the lighting elements of the cacti chair. I had also been considering the idea of painting the chair legs in UV paint, this would create another link between the two outcome.

When considering how to construct the knitted panels, one option was to add something like a knitted tube for the frames of the bars to slide through, however, this would take a considerable amount of sewing and linking since there are 48 panels in total. Making feature of the frame would be more time effective and could add to the overall visual stimulation of the project.
